Video Game Name Generator, by Bustout Games. View it on the App Store · View it on Google Play.
We read everything. It is a small app, so a reply may take a few days.
Suggest a word
The best kind of message. The word lists are curated by hand — that is why the joke works — so suggestions go through us rather than into the app directly.
There is a shortcut inside the app: Settings → About → Suggest a word opens a pre-addressed email.
Useful to include: the word, and whether it belongs at the start, the middle, or the end of a name.
Common questions
Does it work offline?
Always. There is no network connection of any kind — the whole word list ships inside the app.
Where did my old favourites go?
On iPhone and iPad, favourites and history from the previous version are imported automatically the first time you open version 3. Nothing is deleted from the old app in the process.
On Android, version 3 is a separate listing and cannot read the old app's data. The original app was signed with a key that no longer exists, which means it can never be updated in place. If you still have the old version installed, your names are still in it.
How do I stop a word appearing?
Settings → Family filter excludes words tagged for adults. It is on by default.
If a word gets past it that you think should not, please tell us — that is a content decision we would rather get right.
Can I lock a word I like?
Tap it. The reel keeps that word and the other two keep changing. Tap again to unlock.
The animation makes me feel unwell.
Settings → Reel animation has Full, Reduced and Off. The app also follows your device's "reduce motion" accessibility setting on its own unless you have chosen one of those explicitly.
Is there a version for the classroom?
Yes — the classroom button on the main screen. It has a full-screen timer that holds each name for a set number of seconds, and a "generate five and pick one" mode.
How many names are there?
1,248 words, which combine into 69,393,510 possible names.
Reporting a problem
Please include your device, your OS version, and the app version — the version is at the bottom of Settings → About.
